A fun once in a lifetime experience
So when we were at the Hatch family reunion, Uncle Terrance told Diane and me that his granddaughter Sharee was going to be a guest organist for one of the 12 and 2 pm organ recitals in the Tabernacle, and that he would let us know when. Diane called this morning and said it was today, so we went down to see her. (She is my cousin Robert's daughter, maybe 25, married, has a little baby, and she and her husband both got their masters degrees in Organ from U of Kansas. He had been the guest organist on Saturday) She was so poised and matter of fact, and she played really well. It was really neat to be there. To look at her, you would think, oh, what a nice, shy, little Mormon girl from Utah -- what a powerhouse!! We had fun talking afterwards, and her husband came up and asked us if we'd like him to show us the organ -- uh, yeah, so he took just Diane and me up there, and spent about 45 minutes with us answering every question we could think of, playing the lowest note, all the solo flavors and so much neat stuff, telling us about all the organs in America that are big ones, and tons of cool cool stuff. Did you know that the buttons that change the color behind the organ are literally on the organ? It was great - there are 8 colors -- amber, magenta, and some other out of the ordinary names. It's the organist that changes colors! That was funny because the colors changed during one of Sharee's pieces, and I leaned over to Diane and said, "I think she used one of those foot pedals to do that." and she actually had done it herself (but not with her feet!) Matt said that one of the neatest things about the tabernacle organ is that they really keep it maintained and in top shape, unlike lots of other big organs where with so many pipes and things to go wrong, they just can't keep it all working well, or they don't have permanent staff people (or $) to keep them up. Right then 2 men in white shirts came up from the floor underneath and he introduced us -- they are the full time organ maintenance workers that do the Temple Square/Conf center/JS Bldg organs, and they told us a bunch of neat0 stuff too. So, add that to my tour of BeeHive clothing and Press and Distribution as fun inside moments!
